Place Names

Theme Sponsor: ANZLIC (interim arrangement)

Description: Place names are the means by which intelligence about location is transmitted.  They constitute by far the most commonly used spatial identifier, particularly when it is remembered that addresses utilise place names as part of the construct.
The place names theme within the Foundation Spatial Data Framework provides the data through which this intelligence can be stored, standardised and disseminated.

Committees: ICSM Committee for Geographical Names of Australasia (CGNA).

Standards: No standards applicable, but the data contents of the place names data bases are in line with the directions set by the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical names. OGC is currently developing a standard for gazetteers.

Datasets: National Gazetteer of Australia – a subset of jurisdictional data aggregated by Geoscience Australia.  This subset is both a smaller list of fields of information and a limited set of features.  Data is supplied from the jurisdictions on a once a year basis.
